Health Issues

This week there was an article in the paper stating that the FDA is now going to get involved with regulating tattoo ink health concerns. The usual concerns still exist, of course, the blood related issues such as HIV,hepatitis B and C, as well as bacterial contaminants, transmitted through dirty needles.
Allergies are another problem, scar tissue formation, and MRI complications. Although the risk is said to be rare, problems caused during MRIs stem from iron oxide in tattoo pigments. Some people develop swelling or burning at the site of the tattoo when undergoing an MRI.
The director of the FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition stated that the intention is to better understand the body’s response to tattoos and their impact on human health. The intention is to identify products at the greatest risk. In the past the FDA did not traditionally regulate tattoo inks. They said this was due to the agency’s other public health priorities.
The risks and concerns involved have grown as the tattoo popularity has grown. These so-called UV (ultraviolet) or black-light tattoos have been growing in popularity for the past decade, first appearing on the rave scene, then in more tattoo shops across the country. They’re a discreet choice for certain clientele, such as those who have to maintain a professional image in their day-to-day lives.
Some of the UV tattoo inks have been extensively tested with the FDA, some not. If you are thinking of getting a tattoo of this type – do your research and check out the brand of ink used by your shop.
